Hype, FOMO & investing traps
If you saw it on social media first, you're probably late. Here's how to spot traps before they cost you.
FOMO is expensive
Fear of missing out makes people buy after prices have already shot up — then sell when they crash. That's buying high and selling low.
Red flags
Guaranteed returns. Pressure to 'act now'. Influencers paid to promote a coin. Requests to send money to a stranger or through gift cards. Anything you can't explain in a sentence.
Speculation vs. investing
Meme stocks and most crypto coins are speculation — closer to betting than investing. If you play, use only a tiny amount you're fine losing, and keep your core in broad funds.
Real example
The influencer coin
A creator with 2M followers hypes a new coin. Mia, 16, puts in $200 after it's already up 400%.
- Mia buys in
- $200
- Creator sells their stash
- Week 2
- Coin price after
- −92%
- Mia's $200 becomes
- $16
Remember this
- FOMO = buy high, sell low.
- Guarantees and urgency are scam signals.
- Keep speculation tiny; keep your core boring.
